The 4-2-3-1 Wide is widely regarded as the most balanced formation in EA FC Pro Clubs. Two CDMs shield the back four, a creative CAM operates between the lines, wide midfielders stretch the pitch, and a lone striker leads the attack. If your club wants a single formation that works in both attack and defence, this is the starting point.
Formation Overview
The shape uses four defenders, two defensive midfielders sitting side by side in front of the back line, an attacking midfielder in the number 10 position, two wide midfielders (effectively wingers), and a single striker. The double CDM is the defining feature - it provides defensive cover that most other attacking formations can't match.
Best For
- Squad size: 6–11 human players. The four attacking positions (LM, CAM, RM, ST) plus both CDMs all benefit from human control.
- Playstyle: Balanced - structured in defence, flexible in attack
- Skill level: Works at all levels; more rewarding with disciplined CDMs who stay back
Strengths
- Defensive solidity. Two CDMs in front of the back four is difficult to break down centrally. Even against pace-heavy strikers, the double pivot provides cover when CBs step up.
- Width + central creativity. Wide midfielders stretch the opposition defence horizontally while the CAM operates through the central space created. This combination is hard to defend against.
- Positional balance. Every zone of the pitch has at least one dedicated player. No area is completely unprotected when holding shape.
- Counter-attacking threat. With two CDMs holding, the full-backs can push up without leaving the centre exposed, creating fast wide overlaps on the break.
Weaknesses
- Single striker reliance. The lone ST can feel isolated if the CAM and wide mids don't support attacks quickly. Communication is needed for the striker to know when to hold up vs run in behind.
- Wide mid discipline. If the LM and RM don't track back, your fullbacks are left exposed against wide attacks. Both wide midfielders must defend as well as attack.
- CDM instruction critical. If either CDM pushes forward without instruction, the defensive pivot breaks down entirely. Both must have "Stay Back While Attacking" set.
Custom Tactics Recommendations
- Defensive Width: 50–55
- Defensive Depth: 50–55 (standard); 45 when protecting a lead
- Build-Up Play: Balanced
- Attacking Width: 55–60 (use the natural width of LM/RM positions)
- CDMs: Stay Back While Attacking
- Fullbacks: Stay Back While Attacking as default; Overlap if you have human fullbacks making runs
Key Positions for Human Players
Priority human positions in this formation:
- ST: Most goal-scoring output depends on the human striker
- CAM: Central creativity - the engine of the attack
- CDM (both): Human CDMs are far more reliable at staying back than AI
- LM/RM: Width and defensive tracking both require human decision-making
When NOT to Use This Formation
The 4-2-3-1 Wide struggles if your squad has fewer than 5–6 humans and the AI has to fill multiple attacking positions simultaneously. Against a 5-man backline that packs the central area, the single striker can become ineffective without the CAM finding pockets of space efficiently.
