The 4-3-3 Defend is the conservative variant of the classic 4-3-3. Compared to the Attack version, the two CMs sit deeper and closer to the CDM, creating a more compact midfield block. The three forwards remain but work harder defensively. This formation suits clubs that want width and attacking options without sacrificing defensive shape.
Formation Overview
Four defenders, one CDM at the base, two CMs positioned lower than in the Attack variant, and three forwards. The Defend configuration results in a tighter midfield three that is harder to bypass centrally, while the forward trio still provides width and goal threat on the counter.
Best For
- Squad size: 6–10 human players
- Playstyle: Defensive solidity with attacking threat on the break
- Skill level: More forgiving than 4-3-3 Attack because the CMs sit deeper and cover more defensively
Strengths
- Tighter midfield block. The deeper CM positioning makes it harder for opponents to play through the centre. Passing lanes are shorter and more covered.
- Counter-attacking from a solid base. Winning the ball with a compact mid block leaves three forwards already positioned to run in behind on the counter.
- Better against high-press teams. Deeper midfield positioning gives your own defenders and CDM cleaner short passing options than the Attack variant.
Weaknesses
- Less attacking support from midfield. The deeper CMs arrive later into attacking moves - you'll rely more heavily on the forwards themselves to create and finish.
- Still needs tracking-back wingers. As with all 4-3-3 shapes, the LW/RW must defend - this doesn't change in the Defend variant.
- Single CDM still exposed. One CDM covering the central pivot has the same vulnerability as the Attack version in one-vs-two CDM matchups.
Custom Tactics Recommendations
- Defensive Width: 48–53
- Defensive Depth: 45–55 (lower than the Attack variant - protect the back four)
- Build-Up Play: Balanced or Slow Build-Up
- Attacking Width: 50–60
- CDM: Stay Back While Attacking
- CMs: Stay in position or Join the attack for one CM only
4-3-3 Defend vs 4-3-3 Attack
Use the Attack variant when your club has pace and wants to win by outscoring opponents. Use the Defend variant when you want tighter midfield control and less vulnerability on the counter - it's better for clubs that need to grind out results rather than attacking freely. For the attack variant details, see our 4-3-3 Attack guide.
