How to Improve Your First Touch in Pro Clubs

6 min readUpdated March 4, 2026

Your first touch in Pro Clubs determines whether you play on at speed or scramble to recover possession. A poor first touch in your own half under pressure is not just a miscontrol - it is often a goal against. Here is how to eliminate it.

What First Touch Actually Controls

In EA FC, the first touch stat governs two things: whether you miscontrol the ball entirely (it bobbles away from you) and how quickly the ball settles at your feet after receiving. A player with high first touch brings the ball under control instantly and can play on in the same motion. A player with low first touch may require a second touch to settle before they can dribble or pass accurately. In Pro Clubs, where every half-second matters, this difference is enormous.

The First Touch Playstyle

The First Touch playstyle reduces the chance of a miscontrol significantly and smooths the settle animation, letting you accelerate into space faster after receiving. If you play in a position where you receive the ball under pressure frequently - striker, CAM, or winger receiving tight crosses - First Touch is one of the highest-value playstyles you can invest in. It will not replace good positioning habits, but it eliminates the worst-case outcomes when passes arrive awkwardly.

Body Positioning Before You Receive

Face the ball as it arrives. This sounds obvious but many Pro Clubs players are already thinking about their next action - their next pass, their next run - and end up receiving with their back to the ball or side-on with no clear direction to control into. Facing the ball means your player's first touch animation goes forward or to the side, where you want it. If you are facing away, the ball bounces off your back and you have lost it. Before every pass arrives, orient your player to face the source of the ball.

Receiving Away From Pressure

The direction you hold the left stick as the ball arrives determines where your first touch goes. If a defender is behind you, hold the stick away from them - forward or to the open side. If a player is pressing from your left, touch the ball to your right. This sounds straightforward but requires you to read the defensive shape before the ball reaches you. Develop the habit of checking over your shoulder (the L2/LT button triggers this in EA FC) before you receive, so you know which direction is free before you even touch the ball.

Practice Drills

The EA FC skill games in Arena mode include passing and first touch circuits that are worth spending ten minutes on before a session. Specifically, the passing accuracy challenges force you to receive, settle, and play immediately under time pressure. You will quickly identify if your first touch timing is off. Alternatively, jump into a drop-in match with the explicit goal of playing one-touch or two-touch football for the entire game - this forces good receiving habits faster than any drill.

Why Miscontrols Happen at the Wrong Moment

Miscontrols in Pro Clubs cluster at specific situations: receiving with a defender immediately pressing, receiving while facing the wrong direction, and receiving on your weaker foot when the ball comes from a difficult angle. You cannot eliminate all three with attributes alone - you need to position better to reduce how often you are in those situations. A striker who receives facing goal with space ahead miscontrols far less than a striker who spins into pressure on every touch.

Connecting First Touch to Decision Speed

A clean first touch is only valuable if you know what to do with the ball immediately after. Players who improve their first touch but still take three seconds to decide what comes next have not actually improved their impact on the game. Work on your first touch and your decision speed together. Before the ball arrives, decide: am I shooting, passing, or turning? Commit to that decision. The first touch and the next action should flow without a pause.
