4-2-2-2 Formation Guide for EA FC Pro Clubs (2026)

5 min readUpdated March 4, 2026

The 4-2-2-2 is a compact, structured formation that pairs two CDMs defensively with two CAMs in behind the two strikers. It's one of the most balanced formations for central-focused squads - offering defensive solidity from the double pivot while providing two creative midfielders to link play and two strikers to score.

Formation Overview

Four defenders, two CDMs sitting side by side in a defensive pivot, two CAMs positioned centrally in the attacking midfield area, and two strikers. The formation has no natural wide midfielders - it's entirely central and compact. Width comes exclusively from fullbacks pushing forward.

Best For

  • Squad size: 5–9 human players
  • Playstyle: Compact, possession-based, central dominance
  • Skill level: Works well for squads with strong central midfield players but no natural wide players

Strengths

  • Double CDM security. Two CDMs provide the same defensive shield as 4-2-3-1, protecting against central through balls and supporting the back four.
  • Two CAMs - double creativity. Two attacking midfielders means more through ball options, more runners arriving late into the box, and more passing triangles for the strikers to exploit.
  • Two-striker threat. As with 4-4-2, two forwards create constant movement and defensive dilemmas for opposition CBs.
  • Compact defensive shape. Without wide midfielders to track back, the defensive structure is automatically tighter and more central - harder to play through in the middle.

Weaknesses

  • No natural width. All four non-defensive midfield players are central. Against a well-organised team, the lack of width makes this formation predictable.
  • Fullbacks carry all width responsibility. If both fullbacks don't attack consistently, the formation becomes too narrow to stretch the opposition defence.
  • Both CAMs must track back. The two CAMs occupy the space between CDMs and strikers - if they don't apply some defensive pressure, opponents have free space between the CDM line and the strikers to receive and turn.

Custom Tactics Recommendations

  • Defensive Width: 45–52
  • Defensive Depth: 50–55
  • Build-Up Play: Balanced
  • Attacking Width: 45–55
  • CDMs: Stay Back While Attacking (both)
  • Fullbacks: Overlap or Join the Attack - they create all the width
  • CAMs: Get into the box for crosses / Stay between the lines for combination play

Key Positions for Human Players

  1. CAMs (both): Two human attacking midfielders who communicate is the ideal for this formation
  2. STs (both): The forward partnership drives goal output
  3. CDMs: Both benefit from human control for reliable defensive positioning

When NOT to Use This Formation

Avoid 4-2-2-2 when you have natural wide midfielders in your squad who thrive on the touchline. The formation doesn't use wide positions at all - those players are wasted here. It also struggles against teams that press high, because the central packing means your fullbacks must receive the ball under pressure.
